Eastmoreland Mid Century Modern Kitchen Remodel

Eastmoreland Portland Mid-Century Modern Kitchen Remodel

This mid-century modern kitchen remodel in Eastmoreland Portland reimagines a classic home with a layout and material palette that respects its original architecture while significantly improving everyday function. The original kitchen felt visually heavy and disconnected from the rest of the home, with limited openness and a layout that no longer supported how the homeowners lived and entertained. Our objective was to create a kitchen that feels open, warm, and intentional, while preserving the clean lines, natural materials, and understated elegance that define mid-century modern design.

Rather than chasing trends, this remodel focused on timeless design decisions that feel appropriate for the home and the neighborhood. Every change was made with purpose, balancing aesthetics with usability so the kitchen would feel just as good to live in as it does to look at.

Reworking the Layout for Better Flow and Light

The original kitchen layout limited movement and blocked natural light from reaching the main living areas, creating a separation that made the space feel smaller than it needed to be. We reworked the layout to improve flow between the kitchen, dining, and living areas, allowing the kitchen to function as a natural extension of the home rather than a closed-off workspace.

By carefully adjusting walls, openings, and work zones, the new layout supports cooking, gathering, and entertaining without sacrificing definition or structure. Sightlines were thoughtfully planned so the kitchen feels open and connected, yet still clearly organized and comfortable for everyday use.

Mid-Century Cabinetry with a Modern Execution

Warm wood cabinetry anchors the entire design and reinforces the home’s mid-century character. Flat-panel cabinet fronts, simple lines, and understated hardware maintain a clean and timeless look that feels true to the era, while modern construction techniques ensure durability and long-term performance. Storage was carefully planned so the kitchen remains functional without appearing cluttered or visually busy.

The cabinetry layout balances form and function, providing ample storage while maintaining a streamlined appearance. Light-toned countertops contrast beautifully with the wood finishes and help reflect natural light throughout the space, creating a kitchen that feels bright, calm, and inviting throughout the day.

Integrated Lighting and Updated Appliances

Lighting was layered intentionally to support both task work and overall atmosphere. Recessed lighting provides even, functional illumination across prep areas and walkways, while statement fixtures add warmth and visual interest that complements the home’s mid-century modern roots.

Modern appliances were seamlessly integrated into the cabinetry design, improving performance and efficiency without disrupting the clean lines of the space. Each appliance was selected to enhance usability while maintaining a cohesive, uncluttered aesthetic that aligns with the overall design vision.
